After Hours

I’m beginning to realize that my nocturnal nature is going to prevent me from posting these on time quite often. Today I went with my parents to have lunch down in ABQ with my grandparents and great-aunt. In the few hours we spent at my grandparents’ house, the conversation was dominated by the price of land and how they all wish they had invested in property back in the ’80s when much of the Albuquerque metro area was undeveloped. Note to future self: invest in property when and if the opportunity presents itself! We stopped at World Market and Petco on the way back…I got my snake (Nagini) a new heat lamp and extra-large “cave,” which she seems to be enjoying. I also finished The Lost Symbol this evening; it was a good novel, and kept my attention just as well as every other Dan Brown novel ever has, but it wasn’t my favorite. Chris told me he felt like it was a bit of a disappointment and I have to agree with him. I appreciate the message of the book but, without wanting to give anything away, the final revelations weren’t as dramatic as in The Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons. I still found it intellectually stimulating, but I don’t think it will cause a stir the same way those two did. However, I have to appreciate the amount of knowledge Dan Brown contains within his novels. I feel like it would be really fun to research and write my own art historical adventure/thriller novels, but I feel like anybody who does that now will perpetually be compared (and not necessarily favorably) to Brown and especially The Da Vinci Code. Anyway, I digress. I later wound up going to Anthony’s to play Scattergories with Christian, Cosette, and Anthony’s brother Chris (not the same one who commented on The Lost Symbol). After twelve rigorous rounds of Scattergories, I emerged victorious! Then we watched “Something, Something, Something Dark Side.” I haven’t watched “Blue Harvest” in awhile, but I think I might like it better than this new one. And now, at 2:30 in the morning, I finally have a chance to post this. Tomorrow, Christian, Cosette, and I are visiting Lionel Betsch, necktie connoisseur and my first art history teacher. I’m looking forward to catching up with him and having what I’m sure will be an incredibly erudite conversation over Post-Modernist theory. Or not.
